Hi Everybody!

 
I'm excited to announce our winners for our 2010 Images of South Central Iowa Photo Contest here at King's Canyon Fine Art!
 
There were approximately 75 entries between the youth and open divisions.  We had participants from Creston, Indianola, Lorimor, Leon, Des Moines, St. Charles, Murray, Osceola, Winterset, Afton, De Soto, New Virginia, Bridgewater. . . It was a great turn out.  Our judges had a hard time deciding winners this year, due to all of the wonderful photos.  All three judges thought the caliber of photography was even better than last year's, and look forward to seeing the growth and fresh ideas of 2011's participants.  
 
A quick thank you to our judgesStephanie Dunn of Stephanie Dunn Design of Minneapolis, MN, Brad Hansen- owner of King's Canyon Fine Art in Osceola, and Charley Starnes- Superintendent of the Iowa State Fair Photography Salon. Beginning Acrylic Painting with June Boles

Experienced artist, June Boles of Osceola, invites you to develop your acrylic painting skills and gain appreciation for painting as an art form. Co-sponsored by Southwestern Community College.

Monday Drawing Workshops:

Come learn beginning drawing techniques from experienced artist and art instructor, June Boles.  Boles is a flatwork artist living in Osceola, working in a variety of mediums.  Go to kingscanyonart.com to read Bole's artist biography, and stop by the gallery to see examples of her work.  All ages are welcome!

Monday Painting Workshops:

Beginning Monday, September 21st, Sue Allen-Hanson, published Science Illustrator, will teach a series of 5 painting workshops at King's Canyon Fine Arts in Osceola. The gallery is located on the north side of the square at 119 W. Washington. Classes will be held the 1st and 3rd Mondays of September, October, and November (excluding September 7th- Labor Day). The workshops will alternate between acrylics and watercolor painting. Students will have the opportunity to complete a painting, during the 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. sessions, under the guidance of a professional artist. The cost of individual sessions are $40. If students register ahead of time, and enroll in all 5 workshops the cost is $35/session. Students need to bring painting supplies and a sack lunch. The proposed subject matter to be painted are as follows:

Monday, September 21st- watercolor still life

Monday, October 5th- acrylic impressionist floral arrangement

Monday, October 19th- watercolor landscape

Monday, November 2nd- acrylic landscape

Monday, November 16th- free choice watercolor

Intermediate Photography:

Intermediate Photography will be taught by Jamie Pontier of Osceola.  It will take place Saturday, October 3rd from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. in the gallery workshop of King's Canyon Fine Arts.  The class will review the basics and continue further into camera settings and functions.  The cost is $30 per person.  Supplies needed- camera, any kind.  The instructor will also be available at the shop Saturday, October 10th at 10:00 a.m. to provide an optional, follow up, question/answer session.

How to Get Started in Gourd Art:

How to Get Started in Gourd Art will be taught by Evan Branson, a local, prize-winning gourd artist.  The class will cover gourd bowl and birdhouse/feeder techniques.  It will take place Tuesday, November 3rd and Wednesday, November 4th.  Branson will discuss growing, drying, and cleaning gourds.  Students will have the opportunity to experiment with woodburning, micro-sawing, and pine needle coiling methods with their own gourd art projects.  Classes will be held 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the gallery workshop.  The cost is $40, which includes supplies.

Miniature Painting and Photography Show:

Congratulations to the winners of King's Canyon Images of South Central Iowa Painting and Photography Contest. Contest entries were on display the month of June at the gallery and the winners were announced at Osceola's 4th of July Celebration. Thank you to all who participated and the donations of prize money from Whites Woodworking and Friday Insurance Agency Inc. Keep photographing and painting beautiful pictures of South Central Iowa. We plan to hold the contest again next year with a similar theme. *Picture of Teri Fix's 1st place painting with ribbon below. Our spring contest is underway. The subject " Images of South Central Iowa" will be presented in 8"x10" size or smaller. Four divisions will be available for artists to choose from. Tuesday Evening Watercolor Painting:

Steve Scott, accomplished watercolor painter, gave painting instruction to artists during a set of 4 Tuesday evening classes in the workshop of King's Canyon Fine Arts.

Clarence E. Stalcup Book Signing:

Clarence E. Stalcup, of Murray, Iowa, did a book signing for his book, Frontiers Calling. The book focuses on South Central Iowa history via Stalcup's ancestors. Copies are available at King's Canyon Fine Arts for purchase.

Copies will be  available for purchase at the gallery for $19.95.

Gourd Art for Beginners:

Evan Branson, blue ribbon winning gourd artist, instructed students on gourd bowl and bird house techniques during two evening sessions. Students also practiced weaving embellishments and wood burning on gourds.

Photography Basics for Adults:

During a Saturday workshop, Jamie Pontier, taught students the basics of taking quality photographs. Students practiced taking pictures in the square after class and returned the following Saturday for a group critique.

Photography Basics:

Jamie Pontier, an Osceola area photographer, will be teaching a Photography Basics class for adults Saturday, May 2nd and Saturday, May 16th in the workshop of King's Canyon Fine Arts.  May 2nd, 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., students will learn about taking expert shots, before practicing with their cameras on the square.  Students will return in two weeks(May 16th, 1:00-2:00 p.m.) to share their photography with the group for critique.   The cost of the class is $30.

Charley Starnes, the Superintendent of the Iowa State Fair Photography Salon, will be speaking on preparing photography for the Iowa Sate Fair.  The lecture will take place at Southwestern Community College in Osceola, on Saturday, May 9th from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  His 2 hour presentation will cover the process of entering, the different divisions, awards, judging, and suggestions for taking blue ribbon pictures.  Mr. Starnes will dedicate an hour after his talk to answering questions.  There is no cost to attend. For more information contact Sara at King's Canyon at 641-342-4477 or 515-537-4814. Photography Basics for Kids (K-6)

Jamie Pontier will teach a class limited to 12 students, May 30th. Students will learn the fundamentals of photography, tour the gallery, and disscuss the pictures on display. They will then go out and take pictures on the square. The cost for each child is $15.00. Parents wishing to chaperone can stay through the class for free.

Monday Painting Classes:

Starting January 19th, 2009 Sue Allen-Hanson will be teaching painting classes every Monday in the workshop of King's Canyon Fine Arts in Osceola, IA.  The gallery is located at 119 W. Washington, on the north side of the square.  Allen-Hanson will begin her instruction on acrylic painting and techniques, but the class may eventually dabble in other mediums as well.

Allen-Hanson is an experienced oil, watercolor, oil pastel, colored pencil, graphite, and acrylic artist.  She has her Masters in Science Illustration from the University of California in Santa Cruz. Allen-Hanson's work has been on exhibit at several well-known natural history museums, including the Smithsonian Natural History Museum in Washington, D.C.

The subject matter to be painted in the classes will be largely nature and landscapes to best utilize Sue Allen-Hanson's expertise.  Classes will take students through painting pictures, from the beginning stages of sketching, to the most detailed final touches.  Students may choose to paint from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. ($30/class) or from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. ($40/class, with a half hour break for lunch).  Supplies will be available for purchase at the gallery.  It is strongly recommended that students visit prior to the first day of class to gather supplies.  All ability levels are welcome.  The class size will be limited to 8 people.

Carving a goldfinch:

Starting February 21st, 2009 Randy Hansen will start a four week workshop for beginning and intermediate carvers. The class will meet for an hour and a half on Saturdays and will go over the different steps nessesary to carve a goldfinch and paint it. A rough cut bird with eyes and study feet will be made available at the gallery at a cost of $10.00. The cost of the workshop for the four classes is $60.00. Mosaics for Beginners:

In a two part class, taught by mosaic and stained glass artist, Sara King, students learned the necessary techniques to craft their own mosaic trivets and decorative plates.

Mosaics for beginners:

Sara King, mosaic and stained glass artist, who displays her work in and manages King's Canyon Fine Arts, will be teaching 2 - hour and a half long classes. These classes will cover beginning mosaic techniques in the gallery's workshop. The classes will start at 7 p.m. on January 13th and 14th.

Students will be making decorative mosaic plates ( stop by the gallery to see an example). Night one students will chose and break dishes and begin their designing. Night two students will grout their projects.
